Azande is the first movement from the cycle "Sketches" for flute and marimba. The Azande is a tribe found in Central Africa - in an area that now partially belongs to Uganda.

The typical harp music of the Azande served as inspiration for this piece. Marimba patterns emulate the accompanimental figures of the harp, whereas the flute assumes the role of a vocal line.
