Ritual (Dance for Two Pianos)

In RITUAL I employed the African idea of separate lines moving on a static harmonic plane. Melodies, or fragments thereof, are explored essentially on the basis of their intrinsic rhythmic qualities. It is the mosaic of intertwined lines, presented in various guises, that produces the driving, rhythmic force evident throughout the work.
This may be viewed as a Toccata for two pianos. The work was commissioned by Paul Douglas (London) and consists of five scenes for six dancers. It was first performed by the "Small Bones Dance Company" in London.
